Preparations

First of all, we ensure the subfloor is ready. Before anything we take out the tiles from their packaging boxes to mix them accordingly so that they don’t form weird patterns on the particular floor. The raw thinset is mixed in a bucket to achieve the correct consistency and spread across the space that needs tiling using a notched trowel. The surface requires to be measured and the center marked. The center is where reference lines intersect. Thinset application starts at the reference lines which must not be concealed. The thinset is applied uniformly and the excess removed with a wet sponge.

Installation

The first tile is laid at the point where reference lines cross. It is pressed lightly and twisted in order to set firmly in the thinset mortar. If the thin-set oozes between tiles when pressed, it means that too much of it is being applied. At the edges of the first tile, a spacer is placed and this continues with subsequent placements. After the work section is done, a rubber mallet together with a level is used to make the tiles level. Application of the thinset and spacers continues as the tile work goes on and necessary arrangements made in order to align tiles in a straight order particularly on the longest side of the surface. The thinset should be given 24 hours to dry before any job is done on the tiles. For larger tiles such as 12” by 12”, we flat coat their backs with the thinset mortar before setting them on the ground.

Tile Cutting and Fitting

When the tile work progresses towards the walls, entryways, and various stops, we trim them so that they can fit well. We do this with tile cutters which make precise and small cuts or tile saws when we need to cut thicker and bigger tiles. Where curves cuts are necessary, we use tile nippers. After cutting a tile, a file is used to smooth the cut edges. The tile holds in place when an edging strip is set in thinset. The cut tiles should have an allowance of about 0.25” at the edges to allow for expansion and thinset application.

Smoothing breaks

All the jagged and uneven edges of the tiles are nibbled with tile nippers while the rough edges are filed. For the unsightly cut edges, rubbing is performed against aluminum oxide sandpaper to make them smooth.

Grouting

All spaces between tiles are removed and grout mixed with water to ensure the right consistency which should look like paste. We prefer distilled water to create the mixture. Grout is applied into the joints and across them diagonally using a rubber float. The excess grout is removed. Then it should be allowed to cure for 20 minutes before the grout lines are wiped with a damp sponge in circular motion. The grout needs to be set just underneath the tiles. The tiles are then washed with grout haze remover to restore their appeal. After installing the grout, we request our clients not to allow any traffic on the floor for 3 days so that the grout may cure undistorted. Sealing of grout can only be done after 3 weeks after it is completely cured. After grout sealing, we can install transition strips or trimwork.
